Inspiration: A Custom Made Rug for the Millennium Hotel – Al Barsha

Journey of a custom-made hand tufted rug

Interior Designers are our favorite people, and we know their jobs aren’t easy. They have got important clients on the hook for high end build outs. They are managing expectations, handling deliverables, and running point on special orders. They’re team captains to electricians, contractors, and their own employees. They have budgets to balance, appointments to keep, and client concerns to quell.

Our Favorite clients are the ones who bring us with them on spectacular journeys of letting us flex our muscles on challenging designs and unique projects.

Approved Artwork

When one of our prestigious clients, Ms. Natascha Roes came to us with a twinkle in her eye, we knew instantly that something spectacular was on the horizon. You never know where inspiration will come from, and in this case, a low-quality pixelated image achieved new dimensions by transforming into a gorgeous handmade rug.

Natascha was planning a dramatic Entrance Lobby for the Millennium Hotel – Al Barsha, a space where the floor rug was the central attraction. Natascha had come up with a design, which she explained to us in detail. The Floorist immediately started planning on how to recreate that same look and feel that was the designer’s vision on a textile. Our sole aim was to turn the lobby into a truly 3-dimensional experience.

Flood – In

First, we prepared the artwork pursuing the design Natascha had in mind and started playing with color and contrast. We then studied the Floor Plan and furniture placement on the rug and reworked the artwork, but this time with Flood-in plans to understand the Rug’s placement on the floor, the position of the motifs along with the over-all look and feel.

Then, together with Natascha, we matched yarns to color profiles and applied it to the artwork. Once the artwork was approved, we moved on to the sampling stage of the project. After 4-sample strike offs, and a lot of tweaking of colors and design, the samples were finally approved, and we got the go-ahead for production.

The Magic had Only Just Begun.

With the artwork approved, we then collaborated with our production team, who painstakingly fine-tuned measurements and began the meticulous progression of hand-tufting the rug. Soon we began to see our rug slowly come to life and Natascha’ vision revealed.

The finished rug is 7.8m x 10m in size with a total area of 78sqm. Weighing in at 400kgs, this spectacular rug took one whole month and another month to be delivered to us. The designer’s idea and The Floorist’s meticulous planning was brought to life by about 15 craftsmen.

The beauty of this project was that the entire rug was tufted as one piece as it was huge in size and also because the installation had to be in one piece too. With the production team working day and night the rug miraculously completed in an extremely short time frame
