In the mid-19th century near Amsterdam, the Dutch company Heuga, initially a manufacturer of animal skin bicycle seat covers, began experimenting with horse and hog hair yarn to create wider fabrics using a needle punch machine. They ventured into making rugs and broadloom carpets, aiming to eliminate waste by using as much product as possible. To enhance durability, they backed their fabrics with asphalt (bitumen), creating more durable and stiff material. The asphalt backing allowed the fabric to be easily cut into squares, which could be packed into boxes, simplifying transportation. These "Carpet Squares" (or Carpet Tiles) proved ideal for high-traffic areas in Commercial sites due to their durability. They also became popular in Europe for domestic use due to their ease of installation and reduced wastage compared to traditional rolled carpets.
